After a few months of plowing through my Norton Anthology of English Literature with its thin “Bible paper” pages (which I still have), I decided was too shy to interview people. Instead I’d rather spend my time studying literature. That choice led me to writing poems, another change I hadn’t planned. Of course, unlike journalism, I didn’t make any money with poetry. But at least I didn’t have to talk to strangers. Many decades later, another swerve led me to writing a memoir about my relationship with my father. And that nonfiction has led me back to journalism of a sorts. In the past few months, I’ve become an interviewer, talking to writers and reporting about their books. The last interview with Jennifer Lang, who I’d never met. I’ve wound up talking to a strangers after all. Who knows what turns in the road we’ll take. What about you? What turns has your life taken?
